Volution Messaging Server 1.x Posted 2.26.2003 @ 19:32:29 EST by Deuce
I have just installed Volution Messaging Server on Unix Ware 7.1.3 with LKP. It was not easy. The documentation is light. And when you are done, you will not use that machine for much else than a mail server. But...I like it. Once you do everything outlined in the installation notes (and some things that are not listed there), the server finally starts to take shape.
What it will do:

  • REPLACE EXCHANGE
  • Intergrate with Outlook, OE, Eudora, and other mail clients
  • Use LDAP for addressing
  • Make use of Free/Busy time in Outlook
  • Make use of IMAP (via Cyrus)
  • WEB MAIL (Imp)
  • Multiple Virtual Mail Domains
  • Keep you up nights until you get it configured
  • Make your life easy once you do

    What it won't do:
  • Install as easily as UW7.1.3
  • Keep the MySQL engine running for Imp, but that should be fixed in SCO Mail Server 2.0, I am told.
  • I can't think of anything else it won't do.

Note: If you plan to install this version, there are things the manual does not tell you, but I will. Just ask me. For a fee, I will do it for you.

I will evaluate SCO Mail Server 2.0 and hope to find it more user friendly on the install.

Overall, this is a fantastic product. Its what I have been waiting for. Lets take out some Exchange servers... ")

UnixWare 7.1.3 Evaluation Posted 2.26.2003 @ 19:11:13 EST by Deuce
I have had UW713 for some time now but have just gotten around to loading it. Volution Messaging Server was the primary reason I started this evaluation. I wanted to see if it would run on UW713 with the LKP loaded. It does, and quite well. UW713 loads the same way that all the other UnixWares loaded...effortlessly (Thank you SCO!!) I loaded the full educational version with most RPMs so that I could get the feel of a linux machine, and have those capabilities. Everything is working just fine, except for Samba. Not too happy with that, so I may drop back to VisionFS for win connectivity. I can do that because the subsystem is Unix, after all.
Other than some fixes and patches, there is nothing remarkably different about Unix Ware 7.1.3. Thanks, SCO for keeping a fantastic product updated. I understand that Openserver 5.0.7 was released this week. I will evaluate that online soon.
